Winter is coming. Whether you’re flying south or embracing the snow during your winter assignment this year, it’s always nice to come home after a long day to a warm and inviting space. With that in mind, we’ve got the following 6 easy ways you can make your travel nurse home cozy this winter:

Get “hygge” with it

Hygge — pronounced hoo-gua — is a Danish way of life that promotes warmth, health, and happiness. There’s no true English equivalent to the Danish word, but “cozy” comes close. You can bring a little bit of hygge into your home simply by lighting a fire in your fireplace or decorating with candles, lamps, and twinkly lights. Soft throw blankets and fluffy pillows can also add a cozy touch to your space. Finally, one of the main ingredients in a hygge lifestyle is being with your friends and family. So, go ahead and plan a get-together or host a dinner party for the important people in your life!

Bring the outside in

You can break up the gray winter doldrums by bringing home a few green plants, like succulents or African violets. In fact, one study found that indoor plants can reduce psychological stress. Don’t have a green thumb? No worries! Even faux greenery can help bring a little bit of life into a room.

Scent the air with some essential oils

Kick up the cozy factor in your house this winter with essential oils. All you need is an air diffuser and your essential oil of choice. The scents of lavender, cinnamon, or vanilla are all seasonal favorites. Just think of how festive you’ll feel when your home smells like the holidays.

Invest in new bedding

Cozy winter nights start with a comfortable bed. Say goodbye to your thin, cotton bedding and hello to heavier textiles. Think flannels bedsheets, warm goose down comforters, or a toasty electric blanket.

Celebrate winter with comfort food

Winter is also the best time of year to cozy up with comfort food. Bonus points to you if bake or cook them all yourself. For example, you can start your morning with a gooey cinnamon roll and savor some home-made chicken noodle soup for lunch. Then end your day with a dinner of roast beef and mashed potatoes, and you’ve got a recipe for a comfy winter day!

Curl up with a book or two

Winter is the perfect time to catch up on all that reading you’ve been meaning to do. Reading nooks with soft pillows and throw blankets are especially cozy, and good books can magically transport you to another time and place. If you’re looking for a new book to read, we have a few suggestions for you here. Have fun and happy reading!
